Installation of DPG Outlook Office Addin
This page describes how to download, install, and update DPG Outlook Office Addin, so that each user profile has one AddIn installed. These tasks must be performed by your organization's Microsoft tenant administrator.
If you have questions about any of these topics, you should create a support case at Timengo DPG support. But check our FAQ section first!
What is the latest version of DPG Outlook Office Addin?
The latest version is announced here in the Resource Center, along with release notes. The latest version is shown as the top sub-item in the menu on the left.
How do I download the latest version of DPG Outlook Office Addin?
The installation file for DPG Outlook Office Addin is an XML manifest. It is easy to download the installation file, as the manifest is simply downloaded using your customer-specific data.
There are two different types of installation files, and we recommend that you download both:
- Test deployment version is the same as the official release version, except that it is used for testing and verification by a limited number of super users before the release version is sent to all users.
- Release version is used for installation in your production environment.
To download these versions, you must log in to {{ portal }} and open the Download & Install page. Here you will find the links you need to download and install both versions. The links are tailored to your organization and work without further configuration.
How do I install and update DPG Outlook Office Addin?
Please note that we strongly recommend installing new versions of a DPG Outlook Office AddIn release in two stages: First a test deployment to a selected group of super users who can test and verify that the new release works in the current environment, and then a release deployment to everyone in the organization.
Important
It is very important that each user/user profile only has one AddIn installed!
Before you install Office AddIn for the first time, whether it is the test deployment version or the release version, you must ensure that the DPG Outlook Web Add-In app is registered in "Microsoft Entra ID" for your tenant, and you must prepare the DPG Service.
There is not much difference in the installation process itself, whether you install in test or release environment; it is primarily about which manifest you specify. The differences are clearly marked in the following. The purpose of test and release deployment is explained in the point above - there you can also find out how to find the manifest files.
We recommend that you install DPG Office AddIn in Microsoft 365 admin center (https://admin.microsoft.com) under Settings and Integrated apps.
To install the app (test deployment version for test users, and release version for general operation) in your production environment under Deployed apps, select the Upload custom apps button:
- Then set App type to Office Add-in.
- Select Upload manifest file (.xml) from device.
- Select Choose file, and point to the manifest installation file you have downloaded:
- The test deployment version might be named
manifest_DPG_testdeployment_3.0.1193.1.xml - The release version might be named
manifest_DPG_3.0.1193.1.xml
- The test deployment version might be named
- See that the manifest file is validated.
- Finish by selecting Next:
Then select how you want to specify app users, and finish by selecting Next:
You must now approve that permissions are retrieved by selecting the Accept permissions button.
Select Next, and then Accept.
Select Next when permissions are accepted:
Select Finish deployment:
You now see a confirmation that deployment is complete. Finish by selecting Done.
Please note that we strongly recommend installing new versions of a DPG Outlook Office AddIn release in two stages: First a test deployment to a selected group of super users who can test and verify that the new release works in the current environment, and then a release deployment to everyone in the organization.
To update DPG Office AddIn, log in to Microsoft 365 admin center (https://admin.microsoft.com).
Select Settings > Integrated apps, and filter on DPG.
Note the Test deployment column - here it says whether the found installation is a test deployment version or not.
When a new version of DPG Office AddIn is released, we recommend first updating the test deployment version, and then the release version.
Download and deploy the test deployment version first
Select the DPG version marked as Test deployment. Details about the AddIn are displayed, and you can select Update add-in.
Upload the new test manifest, which in this example is named manifest_DPG_testdeployment_3.0.1198.1.xml. See that the manifest is validated, and select Next:
Select Access and update:
When the update is complete, a message is displayed that it succeeded. Finish by selecting Done.
In the overview of Integrated apps, you can now see that the test deployment version is installed. It will automatically be sent to the test users:
Then download and deploy the release version to production
When the test users have tested the TEST DEPLOYMENT version and approved that it works, you can upgrade the release version for general use.
The procedure is the same as for the test deployment version, except that you of course select the version that is NOT marked as Test deployment from the overview of Integrated apps, and you upload the manifest that is NOT for testing deployment.
Afterwards, the overview will show the new version, which is also automatically sent to users in the production environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions we often hear about installing DPG Outlook Office Addin.
How long does it take for DPG Outlook Office Addin to appear in Outlook for new installations?
Although Microsoft says up to 6 hours, our experience is that it can take 24 hours or longer.
We therefore recommend installing DPG Outlook Office Addin on Friday, to give the installation time to complete over the weekend.
How long does it take for DPG Outlook Office Addin to be updated in Outlook for existing installations?
Our experience is that it can take 72 hours or longer.
We therefore recommend installing DPG Outlook Office Addin on Friday, to give the installation time to complete over the weekend.
How long does it take for DPG Outlook Office Addin to be ready after starting New Outlook?
If you start New Outlook and immediately write and send an email, you may receive a message that DPG is not ready yet. This happens because New Outlook has not initialized and loaded the DPG AddIn yet. We experience that it can take 10-20 seconds to load add-ins.
Once your add-ins are loaded, you should no longer experience delays - until the next time you start New Outlook.
Why are there two new Microsoft Entra ID App registrations named 'DPG secure communication' that I did not create?
When users are added to one of the two DPG Outlook Office Addin versions you have installed in Integrated apps, Azure will automatically create two new App registrations. They are used by Azure to "store the users", so to speak.
If you remove one or both DPG Outlook Office Addin from Integrated apps, the App registrations will automatically be deleted.
Can we use a different Deployment method than Fixed (Default)? What about Available or Optional?
We recommend Fixed because it is the default choice from Microsoft, and because it ensures that DPG Outlook Office Addin is automatically rolled out to the shared mailboxes you have selected.
According to our experience, secure mailboxes, shared mailboxes, or functional mailboxes (or whatever they are called in your context) are almost always created in Exchange Online as shared mailboxes.
Can I install and update DPG Outlook Office Addin with 'sideloading' (direct installation bypassing Azure) instead of Integrated apps?
Yes - but we do not recommend it, because then you have no overview or central control over the rollout of installed add-ins and versions.
With "sideloading", each individual user must manually handle everything related to DPG AddIn, including installation and update (version control).
How long does it take for DPG Outlook Office Addin to be removed from Outlook after uninstallation?
Hopefully you will never need to uninstall DPG Outlook Office Addin, but our experience is that it can take 24 hours or longer before DPG Outlook Office Addin is completely removed from a user's profile.
What about the old DPG Outlook Office Addin v2.2?
We no longer recommend installing v2.2. If you really, really need the v2.2 installation file, you can still download it via a link with the following syntax:
https://[HOSTNAME]/api/addin/[CUSTOMERID]/manifest/v2.2
For example:
https://contoso.dpgapi.dk/api/addin/1136667f-6968-4a72-b6a6-ebcb527bb456/manifest/v2.2
The downloaded installation file might be named:
manifest_DPG_v2.2.xml
